Zoysia is a Warm-Season Grass
The term "warm season" means it's green during the warm growing season; going dormant after frost. Even though it's dormant during winter, it can still be walked and played on.
Fine textured Zoysias, such as Zeon, are best established when they are green and actively growing.
Unique to any other type of Zoysia, Zenith lawns can be planted as sod and seed. Zenith sod can be installed all year long, even during the winter when it's dormant. Zenith seed is best planted during the warm growing season when the ground is warm and there is no danger of frost.
Other Zoysia Sod Assets
- Rich green color
- Zeon is fine-textured; Zenith is medium-textured
- Sod offers fast establishment - instant curb appeal
- Moderate growth and recovery from high foot traffic
- Moderate growth both vertically (height) and laterally via spreaders
- The spreaders, also called stolons, are a self-healing asset - they spread to fill in bare spots due to wear and tear
- As such, Zoysiagrass is a great choice for home lawns, commercial developments, and other high-end properties where foot traffic is moderate
- Tolerates extreme heat; also exhibits good cold tolerance throughout its range
Where to Use Zoysiagrasses
- Residential lawns & commercial landscapes
- Condos, resorts, and hotels
- Public & private parks
- Sports fields and golf courses on fairways, tees, and roughs
- It's tolerant of salt water spray so can be planted near the ocean
- Zones 5b to 11a on the 2012 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map or Zones 1-4 on the Turfgrass Hardiness Map
Zoysia sod or seed?
Zeon is a specialized hybrid that is only available to grow as sod that is harvested when it's green and growing; it's not available to plant when it's dormant.
However, Zenith is unique and can be planted as sod and seed. Zenith sod can be installed all year long, even during the winter when it's dormant. Zenith seed is best planted during the warm growing season when the ground is warm and there is no danger of frost. Sodding and seeding result in beautiful lawns that, in time, will look the same. The differences, in brief:
- Zenith sod costs more, but offers instant impact
- Zenith sod cost more, but is easier to take care of during the establishment phase
- Zenith seed costs less, but the trade off is in your time and effort
